Resveratrol
Complex polyphenolic substance developed in hundreds of millions years of evolution to protect intensely sun radiation exposed plants from damage to their genetic substance and their complex intracellular protein and RNA machinery.
Among its beneficial effects are:
Resveratrol has potent cardiovascular protection properties, prevents damage to the endothelium of arteries by several mechanisms.
A landmark paper in nature has shown the dramatic capacity of Resveratrol to protect the liver from the devastating effects of caloric and metabolic overexposure and resulted in eliminating the pathological effects of excess fat and carbohydrates on the liver and completely prevented the resulting reduction in life span when added to the deleterious diet.
Resveratrols capacity to act as a protein bound potent antioxidant partly explains it potential to prevent the accumulation of damage to kidneys and the brain and peripheral nervous system, making it a candidate to protect against neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and chronic loss of kidney tissue and function.
The second major mechanisms by which Resveratrol exerts its beneficial effects on organ systems and the whole organism is its capacity to influence gene expression patterns towards the activation of fundamentally protective control genes like Sirtuins, that have been shown to be activated in caloric restriction and thus have the fascinating potential to extend life span and overall health.
Yet another fundamental mechanism of action of Resveratrol is its broad based antinflammatory capacity, an effects that will help mitigate a variety of age related health concerns. Thus Resveratrol prevents damage by antioxidative protection close to the target and then will still dampen the proinflammatory effects of any molecular insult by blocking, among others NFkB activation, cycloxygenases and cytokine releases, a fortunate combination of health protecting effects.
